Bees bearding in the rain

Recently I split one of my hives by taking the top brood box off to make the new hive. That evening I saw the bees bearding outside the hive entrance in the rain. This has also happened today even when it has been absolutely pouring it down. Its been 14 degrees Celsius in London today so I don’t think it’s the heat. Does anyone have any idea why? There hasn’t been any swarm signs that I have seen.

Hello,

It seems like it might be too hot inside the hive and the bees are chilling outside to cool down.

You say you split the hive but only with a single brood box. Do the bees have enough space?

Check that the hive is well ventilated and consider adding an additional hive box.
